StonyTellers
– StonyTellers is an art platform, which was established in 2019. In 2013 and 2022, the hunger rock with the inscribed dates of the years of drought emerged from the river Elbe again. The first stone soup was prepared in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana in 2019. In 2020, the rock emoji was introduced.
We are stones or rocks, women, feminists, artists, students, curators, gardeners, psychologists, bartenders, intercultural workers, potters, economists, grant applicants, production managers, custodians, graphic designers, photographers, PR, foster mothers, partners, wives.
Can you imagine creating art all alone?
Who is a professional artist? Is that a person who graduated from an arts school and earns their living solely by making art? 1
Are we professional artists, then? 2
How are professional artists supposed to pay their rent, then?
Do professional artists have side jobs?
Do professional artists manage to answer all their emails?
Professional artists are diverse. We are silicas, schists, and amethysts, too.
A wage of a professional Eastern or Central European artist can be no more than 30 cents per hour.
Everyone loves stories. We are born this way. Stories affirm who we are. Everyone needs an affirmation that our lives have a meaning. And there is no better affirmation than being connected through stories. We can cross the limits of time and space; past, present, and future. Stories enable us to become aware of our mutual similarities. Telling a powerful story can change the world, and therefore, let us learn how to be StonyTellers.
In 2021, we had 100 unpaid hours of working for various art institutions. 3

The number of unpaid hours was rising rapidly until October 2022.
The statement was written on the 4th, 13th, and 15th of October 2022, while wearing a cashmere sweatshirt, and made us realize that our answers, actually, raise even more questions.
We are having our second Signal videocall. We are at work. We are at home. We are in an apartment which we have just moved in. We are in a café. We are in a living room. We are on our day off. Our bodies are aching. We feel melancholic. Anxious. We are tired and hungry. We are happy. We feel gratified because our statements can become a part of the archive. We are under a lot of pressure.
Average basic life expenses of StonyTellers are 612 euros a month.
We are exhausted. 5 Precarious. Uncertain. We do not have the social security and are unable to answer the question of why we make art. We are happy for all of our positive experience and collaborations which we could have been a part of. Such experience reduces slightly our frustrations with the fact that it is impossible to change anything. Or they can be understood and shared, at least.
“Now, we would like to welcome and invite you to disconnect from our tough technological world, where we spent the entirety of our time here doing numeral evaluations, interacting with our algorithmic versions, building and maintaining our personal brand. Take some of that time and take a walk outside. Go through woods or a garden. Put your hands into dirt. Play with it and grow some food you need. Reconnect yourself with the nature, with love and all your heart.” 6
In 2022, we spent 20 to 24 hours a week on average working on art projects.7
We find art political. It cannot be separated from a citizenship and the public. Even aesthetic depictions operate based on our norms, unconscious behavioural patterns, stereotypes. We must become conscious of them and work on our tendencies. Together, we create our reality using language and symbols, and by assigning values. In essence, art penetrates the public space and artists are, therefore, responsible for their effort to become conscious of their structures.
How to continue with our praxis without suffering from burning out?
How to make universally sustainable art within our unsustainable system?
Are we collective?
Are we fair?
Are we not tired?
Is our work really necessary? 8

StonyTellers are travellers on their journey through virtual landscape in the anxious reality. Stones or rocks forced to move, do, and tell in the terrain which humans remoulded for their own needs.

– StonyTellers je umělecká platforma, která vznikla v roce 2019. V roce 2013 a 2022 se na Labe znovu vynořily hladové kameny s letopočty suchých let. První kamenná polévka byla uvařena v roce 2019 v Ljublani.1 V roce 2020 se objevilo emoji kamene.
Jsme kameny, ženy, feministky, umělkyně, studentky, kurátorky, zahradnice, psycholožky, barmanky, interkulturní pracovnice, keramičky, ekonomky, žadatelky o granty, produkční, kustodky, grafičky, fotografky, PR, pěstounky, partnerky, manželky.

Plat profesionální umělkyně ve východní a střední Evropě v roce 2022 může být i 7 Kč/hod.
Všichni milujeme příběhy. Jsme pro ně narozené*í. Příběhy potvrzují to, kým jsme. Všichni* všechny potřebujeme potvrzení, že naše životy mají smysl. A nic není lepší potvrzení, než když se propojíme skrze příběhy. Můžeme překročit bariéry času a prostoru, minulosti, přítomnosti i budoucnosti. Příběhy nám umožňují si uvědomit naše vzájemné podobnosti. Vyprávěním silného příběhu je možné změnit svět, pojďme se tedy učit, jak být StonyTellers.
V roce 2021 jsme odpracovaly 100 neplacených hodin pro různé umělecké instituce. 3

Máme druhou schůzku přes signál. Jsme v práci. Jsme doma. Jsme v bytě, do kterého jsme sa zrovna přestěhovaly. Jsme v kavárně. Jsme v obýváku. Práve čerpáme naše pracovní volno. Bolí nás naše těla. Máme melancholickou náladu. Úzkost. Jsme unavené a hladové. Jsme spokojené. Cítíme zadostiučinění, že naše výpověď může být součástí archivu. Cítíme silný tlak.
Průměrné základní životní náklady StonyTellers jsou 15 000 Kč měsíčně.
Jsme unavené. 5 Prekarizované. Nejisté. Sociálne nezabezpečené a neznáme přesnou odpověď na otázku, proč děláme umění. Jsme rády za všechny pozitivní zkušenosti a spolupráce, na kterých jsme sa podílely. Jsou to zkušenosti, které vedou k tomu, aby naše frustrace z nemožnosti něco změnit byla o trochu menší, nebo alespoň chápaná a sdílená.
“Teraz by sme Vás chceli privítať, pozvať Vás odpojiť sa od nášho tažkého, technologického sveta, v ktorom venujeme celý náš voľný čas numerickéj evaluácií, interagovaniu s našími algoritmickými verziami, budovaniu a udržiavaniu našej osobnej značky. Vyčleňte si trošku času a prejdite sa vonku. Choďte do lesa, alebo na záhradu. Položte svoje ruky do hliny. Hrajte sa a vypestujte trochu jedla, ktoré potrebujete. Prepojte sa znovu s prírodou, s láskou a celým svojím srdcom.” 6
V roce 2022 pracujeme průměrně 20 až 24 hodin v týdnu na uměleckých projektech. 7
Искусство в нашем понимании политично. Его невозможно отделить от гражданства и общественности. И в чисто эстетическом изображении мы работаем с нашими нормами, бессознательными моделями поведения, стереотипами. Необходимо это осознавать и учитывать наши тенденции. Вместе мы формируем реальность через язык, используя символы, присваивая ценности. Искусство по своей сути проникает в публичное пространство, и художники*цы так несут ответственность за стремление к осознанию структур, в которых они находятся.
Ako fungovať v našej praxi tak, aby sme nevyhoreli?
Ako robiť umenie udržateľné po všetkých stranách, v neudržateľnom systéme?
Sme kolektívne?
Sme férové?
Nie sme vyčerpané?
Je naozaj potrebné to čo robíme? 8
Aké máme zdroje, z ktorých môžeme čerpať?
StonyTellers sú pútnici*čky na svojej ceste virtuálnou krajinou v realite úzkosti. Kamene prinútené sa hýbať, konať a rozprávať v teréne, ktorý si človek pretvoril k jeho vlastným potrebám.
