Flutura Preka

– born in 1970 in Shkodër, lives and works in Montreal. Flutura Preka, known under the artistic identity The Two Gullivers, works as an artistic duo with her husband Besnik Haxhillari since 1998, the duo dedicates itself to performance art. She studied visual arts at the Academy of Arts in Tirana, Lausanne, Berlin and at Montreal UQAM (Université du Québes à Montréal) where she completed her Ph.D in studies and new practices of performance art.

I carry out my performance as an artistic medium in a multi-disciplinary context. My artistic identity is made up of The Two Gullivers12. This designation emerges out of the Jonathan Swift novel, Gulliver’s Travels. Both Gulliver and I are in permanent movement, while relentlessly encountering various cultures, the latter alerting us to feel interchangeably as lilliputs or giants.

The creation approach affects specifically the research of identity and the relationship with the other3. My art emerges out of a composed identity, being multiple and in a dialogue-oriented sense. This process has been set up by way of continuous negotiations in relation to others, art institutions and the new policies appearing time and again in contemporary art.

My personal life is the main component of my art: a female artist, living in a couple and with  three children. Balancing my personal life and the art is a daily challenge, from my very incipient stages as an artist until to date. My family is and still remains constantly part of my art. My children have been brought up along with my performance. They are the most sincere share-holders in my artistic work. I assert wholeheartedly that they have been brought up alongside my performances, since they have been exposed in the gallery premises; they have lived there; they have performed there; they have done their school homework there and they have even fallen sick and healed there. This experience is reflected in my artistic works.

Along with the creation of artistic performance, theoretical studies in the field of performance have also fallen under my focus, with this being, from its very nature, a discipline with many surprises, an unsteady art 4567. Exhibiting and re-enacting  performances, a type of  ephemera art,  is a substantial part of the research, whereby I, in the context of the re-enactment8, endeavour to highlight the challenges of such re-enactments and of the repetition in performance context of my practice as a composed identity of The Two Gullivers and other performance artists. Author’s rights are issues having assumed their own share in the recent content, since my performance works are relentlessly encountering production and exhibition politics, thus pointing my artistic activity in search of new approaches and advancements in this direction continuously. These dynamics have actually been the catalyst for my articles to be published in various important magazines. I have, inter alia, in 2018 proposed a new term in connection with the process of creation in performance and its archiving process: Performography, meaning the art of composing the performance.

My work is such that, along the performing activity, it is composed also through the presence of a painting910, sculpture, design objects11, drawings and a singer12, dancer, or scientist, thus it is a work enriched with various disciplines and participants from all fields. The archive of my art is an infinite source, thus helping me to propose  new works and terminologies. These new terms emerge out of the longer experience, preceding any sort of innovation. Of interest in my research is the identification of some disputable aspects of the re-enactment practice in contemporary art from the perspective of the performance practitioner. The questions arising in this research approach have emerged and appear specifically through my practice, through contact with some historic moments of performance of Marina Abramović13 (whom I worked with during 1999 – 2010) and her artistic performance work in the context of revising the current debate referring to the re-enactment of the performance work.

Identiteti im artistik është The Two Gullivers12.
