Pinkflamingos

Pink Flamingos corp. is an artistic duo established in January 2019 by Markéta Soukupová – born 1992, and Alex Petrova –born 1993. We work primarily with the medium of computer games and gallery installations.

We are a collective of two artists who work together on projects with social themes. Each of us has a different background: one approaches her work from a practical standpoint, the other from an artistic angle. Thanks to that, each of us has a slightly different point of view on art. For Markéta, art is something which is not easily separated from personal life, while for Alex, art is more of a profession.

Our projects are based on personal experience, therefore they can be viewed as a kind of documentation work. Our personal experience is important for the authenticity of our work. We use the video game format as the primary medium for our projects. This format is convenient due to its inherent interactivity and offers an opportunity for us to pull the spectator into the centre of a story and compel them to experience situations they might not otherwise have access to.  Currently, we use 2D graphics; realistic visuals are not something that we aspire to –  on the contrary, we think that overly focusing on realism could detract from the project.

It is crucial to us to find the desired visuals for each project in such a way that the appearance does not overshadow our message and at the same time doesn’t have the effect of being too infographic. In some cases, for instance, in Epic Fight1, the work on the project was preceded by research on the subject of fighting games and the stereotypes connected to them2

It is important to define what it is we oppose.

For some projects, we appropriate existing games (Epic Fight, Maria3), while other of our games function only in the framework of the gallery exhibition (Bad Joke4, Bauhaus: The Stress Simulator5).

As a collective, our approach to work is non-hierarchical. All of our decisions are reached on the basis of mutual discussion. After discussing the basic idea, we reflect upon the ways we can approach the theme and the most important concepts involved, and then our work is split into technical and visual parts.  Each of us then proceeds to work on the task she has the most experience with.

We do not believe there is a single right way to approach art, or correct art practice. Every artist should have the ability to choose to work in the way that they require. When it comes to art, in fact, different approaches are crucial – together they form a complex image.

In our practice, we try to pose questions and bring attention to those aspects of everyday reality which are overlooked by most people. Topics which interest us are the issues of capitalism, the dismal social situation and our sexuality. Our personal lives are a perpetual source of inspiration – everyday money problems, shopping for food, endless obligations, omnipresent depression and stress.

Feminism is, then, reflected in our approach to art. Existence in patriarchal society, which prevents us from doing things on the basis of how we look and what is written in our ID. It’s a role we are forced to play, without anyone asking us whether we desire to do so. The male perspective is the default, and embedded in our lives so profoundly that it is difficult to oppose, because it means being constantly aware of all of the ways in which it influences us. Being a woman is automatically political, and it requires extra labor. In our country, the general consensus is that we are all equal; the facts, however, tell a different story. Sexism is still alive and well here, evidenced, for instance, by the abundence of rape, or the ratio of men versus women holding positions in any occupation. In the art world, the situation is no different: the teachers at art universities are still predominantly male, as are the artists represented at the major art galleries.

We use art as a tool. It is a way for us to attempt to mold the world to our perspective, even just a little bit, since art is something that cannot be escaped – it surrounds us everywhere we go.

2Epic Fight is an interpretation of fighting games such as Street Fighter or Tekken. The male characters are replaced by women - non-sexualized, yet still very deliberately stereotypical.

Ve své práci pracujeme primárně s médiem PC her a galerijních instalací.

/ruzoviplamenaci.itch.io/

V některých projektech tedy pracujeme s apropriací existujících her (Epic Fight, Maria3), zatímco jiné zase fungují pouze v rámci galerijní instalace (Bad Joke4, Bauhaus: The Stress Simulator5).
