Olga Sazykina /

– born in Moscow in 1955. Artist, teacher and curator. In 1960 Olga and her parents moved to Minsk. In 1977, she graduated from the Belarusian State Theatre and Art Institute ( now – Belarusian State Academy of Arts). Lives and works in Minsk.

“At an early age, I started drawing, sculpting, creating objects from different materials: paper, plywood, rope, pieces of leather and metal.

Growing up, I understood that all people are different and they understand each other and the world around them very differently. And that the most understandable language of communication with the world for me is the visual one. I have never been given any other choice than to be an artist.

All my life I have been looking for an answer to the trivial question: who am I? It has always been a process of searches and self-observation. Colour and black and white dreams, colour and graphic preferences, experiments with form and meaning, relationships with time and space. Where are we coming from and where are we going? What do we remember from our previous lives? Who were my ancestors? What territories did they live in? You get it all out of yourself, which is sometimes incredibly difficult and requires concentration and self-discipline.

I invented my first visual language, the expressiveness of the art medium – Glass. The Applied Arts and Crafts department at the Academy of Arts gave me a profession. Then I worked at the Neman glassworks as a designer for 10 years. We had the opportunity to experiment, create formal objects of glass and metal. I took up painting and graphic design later, as soon as the Iron Curtain fell. There was a real interest in Eastern European art at that time, and that allowed us to hold group exhibitions in Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Later the times of natural selection and healthy competition came.

As a result, I ended up in an artistic residency in Switzerland. For me, it was a time of transition to another level of understanding of my art. A transition towards minimalism and conceptual practices.

On similarities and differences, on one’s nature. Me and the Others

It all started with a project called The mimicry of lungs or A diary of breath12.

On black paper with a white chalk pencil, in the state of internal listening, I conducted the consecutive record of my breathing rhythm. Pausing for a break, I recorded the time in hours and minutes. This project is permanently repeated in different geographical points when I stay in different countries, at different seasons, different times. I am repeating it now. I keep on working on this project. It is always relevant to me because there is not a single repetitive breathing record. And every person’s breathing rhythm is individual and different, like fingerprints. This was followed by the project Unit of Personal Measurement 34, then Dialogue or A cloth from petals567.

In the 90s, the openness of borders changed many things in my life. My social circle changed, Polish and German curators invited me to participate in international projects. New media, such as video art and installations, have been added to my work. The projects were funded, albeit on a small scale, but this gave me freedom. After a plein air in the Balkans, I mastered the technique of making handmade paper. And when I started travelling and exhibiting all over the world, I took dry paper pulp with me for further processing, made objects on the spot, dyed them, planted Belarusian wheat grains in the paper, mixed them with soil and sprouted them.

Being able to travel, organise exhibitions, meet other artists and work on international projects is my dream and one of the most interesting stages in my artistic biography. Every new place in the world becomes my creative laboratory, produces a response in my art. Autobiographical Surfaces projects turn into cheerful normalcy.

I often use the techniques of research in my artistic practice and even keep it in my titles – Laboratory of Accelerated Growth, Laboratory Practices, Experiments. The research itself is an experiment. It can be turned into a message to the world. When the process becomes a result, you realise that even if you are not working, you do work. The process is developing, we are changing.

Artists cannot exist beyond time, we live in the present moment and cannot be indifferent to the situation around us. The Academy is a direct link between my artistic practice and my social role as an educator. When they started expelling students from the Academy after peaceful student protests, many teachers could not tolerate it. We wrote petitions in defence of the students. I have to stay in teaching and continue to work with young people. Glass design is a very rare and vanishing profession in our country today. The continuity is disappearing, the link between generations is being destroyed, once again. There is no Teacher, no school, no followers.

The creative work and personal life of a female artist do not always work out well. More often than not, I observe how women, due to their “caring” nature, lose out in these relationships. You have to be very strong and do not depend on circumstances not to lose yourself in partnership. I strive for self-sufficiency and try to protect my “boundaries”. Intimate relationships are demanding and take a lot of energy. Every time I look back, I think about the lost time.

I believe that the project of earthly civilization is a failed and imperfect one. And it is the personal responsibility of every individual, even more so of an artist, to choose a passive or active stance on reality. To participate in the social and political life of the country, in education. Feminism in Belarus is an almost untouched theme with which female artists could and should work.

One of the art’s functions is to talk about problems and change the world for the better. And the artist always has a wake-up call inside – the responsibility to themselves for their actions.”
