Zuzana Pustaiová

– born 1990, in Levice. She started to take an interest in visual arts with painting but soon she switched to photography, which she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia, and University of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld, Germany. Currently, she is finishing her doctoral degree in arts. In her artworks, Pustaiová explores role-playing in contemporary society as a principal element that forms the relationships between family members, relatives, friends, or other diverse social groups.  With a sense of wit, humor and irony, she uncovers the cultural stereotypes related to gender, age, tradition, and social inclusion. She has received numerous awards in contemporary photography (1st Prize at the Rovinj Photodays 2018, finalist for the Lucie Foundation Scholarship in Los Angeles 2017, Honorable mention at Latitude Life APS in Italy 2019), and in 2018 she was named Slovak Photographer of the Year. She has exhibited internationally in Europe and Canada. Pustaiová lives and works in Levice and in Bratislava.

I got into art as a little girl. While other children enjoyed going to toy stores, my paradise was stationery – tempera paints, brushes, markers, pencils, and other creative needs. Art is an integral part of me. It is the instant part of being, my personality, we can say that it is an obsession that cannot be rid of. I cannot imagine life without the possibility of creative self-realization. I think it would be empty, without some deeper meaning. Being an artist is my job, as I work PhD. student at the Department of Photography and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, as well as my identity. These two parts are interconnected and are inseparable. They coexist in harmony.

In my artistic practice, I often draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings. These are situations, moments, problems that irritate me, encourage me to explore and understand them more deeply, or they are everyday little things that I transform into new comments. In my work, I return to issues related to stereotypes and topics related to the family – comments on gender and gender stereotypes of the family within the Central European context (Family Album – since 2013)1, multi-layered structures of relationships within one family (Faces of Family, 2017)23 or the question of searching for answers in the life phase of defining oneself from the biological family and forming a new family (Interlude, 2020)45. Although individual projects deal with the family issue, they are not the result of a program setting. My projects arise individually, but in view of the whole genesis of creation, they are interrelated, refer to each other, shift and develop.

Although I am a woman artist, I cannot say that I consider myself a feminist author. I do not deal with general topics arising from socio-political events, rather opposite. I focus on personal topics that can be generalized. The feminine view is perceptible in my work, I would say legible, and I think that trying to eliminate it would cause that art would not be honest. And art should be honest. We cannot say what topics the female authors should or should not have to work on or which topic is more relevant, and which is not. Quality, innovative and from another point of view processed art will always have an impact on the audience and will interact.

Creation is my integral part. In everyday life, it is difficult to separate art from everyday life. It is different from the people who can forget about work the moment the shift ends. I think about my art, when I drink morning coffee, it is with me when I shop groceries, and in the night when I go to sleep. The program setting of the mind cannot be changed. And actually, I wouldn’t even want to change that.

On woman artist is generally placed much higher demands (care for the household, family, children, financial stability). Currently, our society is shaken by questions about the tightening of abortions, which are a hot topic in Poland, but Slovakia is “trying to go” in its footsteps, against which a large part of the population is rebelling. Naturally. It is a very sensitive topic and affects every woman, not just the artist. I think that in this case it is good if art is political, despite the fact that in my work art and politics do not meet at one point. I am interested in what is happening in the society, but as an author I do not feel the need to process these questions. We have excellent artists who can present these topics brilliantly. Art is meant to stimulate, bring topics, talk about problems and conflicts, and open a discussion.

– narodila v Leviciach v roku 1990. Medzinárodne vystavovala v Európe a Kanade. Pustaiová žije a pracuje v Leviciach a v Bratislave.

Kým iné deti radi chodievali do obchodov s hračkami, mojím rajom bolo papiernictvo – tempery, štetce, fixky, ceruzke a iné kreatívne potreby.

A umenie má byť úprimné.

A vlastne, ani by som to nechcela meniť.

Prirodzene. Umenie má podnecovať, prinášať témy, hovoriť o problémoch a konfliktoch a otvárať diskusiu.
