Marina Naprushkina /

– born in 1981, in Minsk. Artist, feminist, and activist. Her practice includes video, performance, drawings, installation, and text. Marina works outside institutional spaces, in cooperation with communities and activist organizations, focusing on creating new formats, structures, and organizations based on self-organization overlap in theory and practice. She is a participant of the Kyiv Biennale (2017), the 7th Berlin Biennale (2011), 11th International Istanbul Biennale (2009). Her work has been featured in exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien (2020), Tallinn Art Hall (2018), Arsenal Gallery, Bialystok (2017), Moderna Gelerija Ljubljana (2012), BAK, Utrecht (2012). In 2007 Marina Naprushkina founded the Office for Anti Propaganda. It concentrates on power structures in nation-states, often making use of nonfiction material such as propaganda issued by governmental institutions. In cooperation with activists and cultural makers, Office for Anti Propaganda lounges and supports political campaigns, social projects, publishes underground newspapers. In 2013 the artist initiated the Neue Nachbarschaft/Moabit (Berlin) – the initiative aimed at building up a strong community of people with and without migrant and refugee background. Marina Naprushkina was awarded the European Cultural Foundation Princess Margriet Award for Culture (2017) and the Sussmann Artist Award (2015).  Lives and works in Berlin.

I find it hard to talk about art with myself and describe my work and experience. I feel it as more naturally unfolding in a conversation, when my speech is unhindered and a free exchange occurs between interlocutors: one can argue, support, or laugh. Art interacts with us in a similar way: it does not arise in an empty space, but is always a continuation of what has already been started – but in a new time dimension.

It is both pleasant and painful to read my female colleagues’ statements about their experience in art field. Indeed, in the course of time, you realize what gaping voids the history of art contains, how controversial its canons are, and how, for example, difficult and often impossible it is to rely on art made by men.

I have never questioned art itself as a method. But for me its history, institutional and academic field, is a zone of constant critical rethinking. And it is in this process that the initiatives and projects I launched and am involved in are rooted.”12345678

Below is my interview with curator and art-critic Nataša Ilić on labour, art and neighborhood as a modus of our social life.

Nataša Ilić The title of the exhibition is “No Time For Art” . This is a statement about the working conditions in art and probably also about the labour conditions as such today. What exactly are you suggesting here?

Marina Naprushkina A red table is set up in the main room of the gallery: the table is higher than a normal table, three chairs placed around the table have shortened, sawn-off feet. A sculpture is installed at the head of the table: chickens peck at the plate when you move a ball under the table. So, it is not really comfortable to sit around this table when you want to work or eat. This object is called “No time for Art”.

“No time for Art” also addresses the situation in which many artists find themselves. We can no longer find a balance to do our job well. A teacher is not expected to do her work for free and a cook must have time to cook, otherwise there will be no food. But work and pay in cultural work are no longer linked. Since August, I have had an artist studio. When I signed the lease, I had doubts whether I could pay for the space in the long term. Now I have a paid job, I can afford the studio, but I lo longer have time to work there. I want to be paid for what I do well. Art is not a hobby. Art is essential for society. Art has this subversive power to evade the logic of transforming everything into commodities and capital, but how can we overcome the precarious conditions of art workers?

NI When we talked about the work for this exhibition, you mentioned that you came up with the idea of the “chicken table” in the book “Happiness to survive: An autobiographical search for traces” by Oskar Negt.

MN I saw Oskar Negt speaking at an event. He had such a physical presence and spoke with such clarity that I was very impressed. You could see how much strength it took him to do this talk at his age. In his autobiographical book, he emphasized that he had a fulfilled life. I wonder how many of us can say that? And why don’t we achieve it? What is stopping us? Negt narrates his childhood experiences as a refugee. In one chapter of the book he writes about life in the internment camp in Denmark and how as a child he built a small workshop there to make toys. One of them is the chicken game, which I would like to recreate as a table sculpture. Negt says: “The way we deal with refugees is always an expression of the state of mind and the culture of a country.”10

NI If you don’t have time, how come you founded the New Neighborhood/Moabit initiative? Also: You mention. “slow time”, what are you referring to?

MN The New Neighborhood/Moabit initiative results from my work as an artist. It was necessary to found this initiative. I organized a studio in an emergency shelter in Moabit. More and more children and adults came in every day. I saw that as a sign that I am doing the right thing. Today the initiative has its own rooms, it’s open seven days a week, hundreds come, it is a place of lived diversity. People learn in and from the exchange with each other and everyone can start making art. The craft, how to write a text, how to play a musical instrument, how to paint or print, this knowledge and ability is shared.

The founding of the initiative also arose from my frustration with the art business. We created a monster with the art system. Artists no longer have an economic basis for their work. When you get older, you will face poverty. You can’t afford a family in terms of time or finances if you want to keep up with “the business”. Under such working conditions, nobody can persevere for long periods of time. I need “slow time” to make art, to observe, to develop, to remain curious, to educate myself, to establish social relationships.

NI The Moabit Mountain College arose from this initiative. How is the college structured? Can you give an example?

MN We have many collectives: “Collective WIESE” (literature and theater), “Collective Basis and Future” (visual art), “Language and Friendship” (linguistics), “Sheroes of Jabalmoa” , »إنسِجام« Insi’Jam (musical collective), “Wednesday kitchen”, “MMC-junior” and others. They usually meet weekly. If they have something “finished”, a film, text, song or topic that they want to discuss, an event is scheduled and everyone gets invited. In this way we manage to get everyone moving, as an audience or even better, as part of one of the collectives. I think that every art and cultural space could be organized that way.

In the exhibition I show the clothing collection “I Am Because We Are”. It consists of work clothes, and a sleeve of the jacket is always exchanged for a sleeve from another piece of clothing. We wear this MMC uniform at public events.

NI From your perspective, what is the relationship between artistic practice and learning processes? How do art, education and solidarity emerge?

MN We do not only learn at school. We learn a lot through joy and curiosity,  and sometime we only learn things under pressure. For older refugees, for example, learning another language is a difficult task. And in this case, a language course doesn’t help much either. So where and how do we learn? How can we continue to learn, experience and try something new in our very fragmented existence (we have a lot of tasks to do every day that often have nothing to do with each other)? How are social interactions connected with it? Can you learn those too and what is required?

It is important to create a community that tracks the issues that are important to us and also creates discourse. And then puts it into practice. That’s exactly what we’re trying to do in the New Neighborhood/Moabit with Moabit Mountain College.

NI What do you think of exhibitions as a format for your artistic practice?

MN That’s a difficult question. An exhibition usually takes place in a space. It is not just an aesthetic, but a social and not least a political space. One cannot think of an exhibition as independent of this space, the institution and its structures. The artists have little say in the design of these structures. You are often faced with the fact that there are hardly any financial resources, for example. This exhibition also has a production budget of 1,000€. You can’t really create something with this. At the same time, this gallery is one of the few state galleries in Berlin that supports artists through solo exhibitions.

Art work creates exhibitions in institutions, which in turn create jobs, that are often underpaid. For artists, exhibitions legitimize them to the outside world as working people. The ›Künstlersozialversicherung‹ also requires proof of exhibition activity in order to be further insured by them. Luise Meier* writes in her text  “Vom Ich zum Haus” (“From the Self to the House”): “Since solidarity is not a product but a collective learning process, spaces and institutions are needed in which cooperative structures are tested in practice (…)”11.
Can an art institution become such a space?

NI You wanted to make a video about the future. What do you think the future will look like?

MN I don’t know if I still have time to produce the video, but the future will be: unlimited, bright, with joy, success, progressive, creative, for everyone, it will come soon, will be impartial, attentive and caring, for all ages. The future belongs to us, you, me, it is for women, it brings no work, no coercion, no more illnesses, no debts, love. The future exists for the hungry, the poor, the nameless, it will be exciting, warm, colorful, we will be amazed, we will experience everything, we will not forget anything, we will experience the world and the world will see us without pain and death, without humiliation, the future will exceed all our expectations, future in all languages, beautiful, in the future we will belong to ourselves, create for everyone, the future in motion, in understanding, in justice, everything will be accessible in the future, forever, the future for everyone!

Работы выстаўляліся ў Kunsthalle Wien (2020), Tallinn Art Hall (2018), Galeria Arsenał w Białymstoku (2017), Moderna galerija Ljubljana (2012), BAK, Utrecht (2012).
