Halyna Sevruk /

Halyna Sevruk /

– born in 1929 in Samarkand, Uzbek SSR, USSR, died in 2022, Kyiv. Artist, sculptor-monumentalist, ceramist, graphic artist and painter. Member of the “Creative Youth Club” (1960-1964). Distinguished Artist of Ukraine, the member of the Ukraine’s Artists’ Union (till 1968 and after 1989). Laureate of the Prize named after Vasyl Stus from the Ukrainian Association of Independent Creative Intelligentsia (1991), and Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Award (1994). She graduated from the painting department of the Kyiv Art Institute (currently the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture). Together with the artists Alla Horska, Opanas Zalyvakha, Galyna Zubchenko, Ludmyla Semikina she represents the Sixtiers. From the late 1970s, she started working on monumental paintings. Halyna Sevruk worked in the ceramic workshop of Nina Fedorova and under her influence she developed her interest in creative endeavors and ideals of the Executed Renaissance actors. As a ceramist, she employed the motives of the old Ukrainian statehood and the heroics of the Cossack times.

Among the male and female artists of the second half of the XX century, Halyna Sylvestrivna Sevruk is one of the most consistent and convincing artists. She was faced with a choice in favor of either painting, or graphics, or working with clay. The latter was the final one1. Her dominant subject-matter is historical and mythological images of Kyivan Rus and the Cossack era.

Halyna Sevruk’s father was an architect, and that influenced her understanding and refined sense of architecture which she skillfully used when working in the field of monumental art. On her mother’s side, Sevruk belongs to the noble family of Hryhorovych-Barsky. Her great-grandfather Ivan Hryhorovych-Barsky was a remarkable architect, representative of Baroque architecture. Her grandfather Dmytro Hryhorovych-Barsky was a lawyer. In her memoirs, Halyna Sylvestrivna recalls that for winning the Beilis case2 the Jewish community of Kyiv granted her grandfather with a magnificent edition of the Bible with the engravings by Gustave Dore. She always examined them when she was young, and that was shaping her aesthetic worldview.

Halyna Sevruk was born in Samarkand in 1929. In 1930, her family returned to Ukraine – first to Kharkiv, and later, in 1944, to Kyiv. At the age of 17, Halyna began taking drawing classes from the famous artist Hryhoriy Svitlytskyi who was a friend to her parents. In 1947-1950 she studied at the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko Arts High School. In 1952-1959, she was a student of the Kyiv Arts Institute, workshop of Viktor Puzyrkov. After graduating from the Institute, Sevruk worked in the arts fund for some time. However, she was not pleased with the job, as it was required to make politicians’ portraits – on order.

Her work within the Experimental Laboratory of Architecture Ceramics (“Nina Fedorova Workshop”, ot “Sofia Pottery Studio”) was influential to Halyna Sevruk. The ceramic workshop was established in 1946 with the intention to introduce new solutions of decorative plasticity during the post-war reconstruction of Kyiv. Subsequently, the studio became an important artistic center where the modern trends within the artistic ceramics were formed3. Halyna Sylvestrivna worked there from 1964 till 1985. It was there, that Sevruk started making ceramic layers combining low relief and color glazes which became dominant in her work: Anastasiia, Anna and Yelyzaveta Yaroslavny4, Sviatovlav, the Kniaz (1976), Kyi, the Kniaz (1978), Oh, the fire is burning on the mountain… (1969), Ivan Mazepa5.

In 1963, Halyna Sevruk prepared her first mosaic work Lisova Pisnia6 (English: The Forest Song). Under the guidance of Stepan Kyrychenko, at his studio, she discovered the whole world of monumental art. In the mid-1960s, the Artists’ Union had just opened a section of monumental art, and those artists who did not wish to confine themselves within the limits of social realism and easel art, fled there with the pursuit of creative freedom. Sevruk mostly made collected ceramic monumental panels that were composed of independent layers and/or elements – like a puzzle. In the 1980s, the artist completed a number of such works in the Rus Hotel78, the Zolotyi Kolos Hotel9, the Tourist Hotel10 in Kyiv and the Hradetskyi Hotel in Chernihiv11. The first two mentioned were destroyed in the 1990s when the Soviet buildings in Ukraine started to get renovated and modernized. The ceramic panels from the Kyiv-based “Tourist” hotel and the Chernihiv-based “Hradetskyi” hotel were rescued by the activists in 2020, when the new hotel owners were about to dismantle them. They have been transferred to the collection of the National Sanctuary Complex “Sophia of Kyiv” and Chernihiv Art Museum12, respectively.

Halyna Sevruk was an active member of the Creative Youth Club. Formally, the Club was an organization of the Kyiv-based Commitee of the Komsomol. Informally, it was a self-organized club of the creative intelligentsia with a strong public opinion which entailed the idea of national revival and resistance to the totalitarian regime. The Club’s members were constantly under the close attention by the KGB, they were surveillanced and summoned for interrogation. In 1968, they prepared “Letter of Protest 139” to Leonid Brezhnev, Oleksii Kosygin and Mykola Pidhornyi with the demand to stop executing illegal political trials. This letter had intensified the repressions against the signees – Halyna Sevruk was expelled from the Artists’ Union.

While continuing to work in Nina Fedorova’s studio, Halyna Sevruk was skillfully portraying the images of the Slavic methodology and depicting the characters of the old-Rus and Cossack era. In the early 1970s, Halyna Sevruk was banned from working with the Cossack topics by the studio’s management. Around the same time, she started developing her interest in painting. Her paintings are deeply symbolic and touching: Hands13, Father is Leaving (1971), Tremibitas. The Portrait of Alla Horska14, Snowdrop (Nadiia Svitlychna) (1972), Broken Wings (1967), Ghost.Fascism15, On the Cemetery of Executed Illusions (1973), White Rus (1971), Cossack’s Graves the other title 1938 (1967), Suffering (1967) and many others.

The graphic works of Halyna Sevruk made with pen and ink are perfect, composition-wise. In her memoirs, she writes: “Composition is the basis for thinking, the basis for drawing, the basis for a vision. It is like handwriting, like a style in architecture which I am trying to get closer to throughout the course of my entire life1617”. Since 1990, she led the ceramic studio at the Kyiv Creative Youth Center. Halyna Sevruk’s creative output includes more than 300 ceramic layers and 30 monumental compositions (unfortunately, not all of them remained intact), as well as numerous paintings and graphic works.
